Threats Are Everywhere
By simply using your phone to send messages, make payments, or view social media, you are exposing yourself. Thieves can now, easily, steal your whole life. That’s not even taking into account the devastation that would be caused by losing your phone entirely. In this day and age, everywhere you turn you risk exposure and compromise.
Your Government Is Watching
The NSA has been caught spying on us, we all know that. However, it would be foolish to think they are the only ones. Any structured government has the ability to view our digital footprints, access our data, and even watch us through webcams. Think about that for a second. Does your computer have webcam? If so, it could already be compromised.
You Are At Risk Through Your Employer
Even if you somehow managed to control all your personal information, you can still be compromised. You work for and do business with many entities. Along with personal information, you have information that is used at work. Most of the time, this information overlaps. This mean that if your place of employment was compromised, you would also be compromised through your data. Furthermore, you are at risk through daily purchases. For example, you buy toilet paper from Target; therefore you could lose everything. You might be thinking “How can I lose everything over some toilet paper?”. The answer lies, yet again, in information. If Target were to be breached (as they have been numerous times), your personal and financial information could lead to your compromise.
Your Digital Life Is Permanent
Contrary to our short lived days, our information is permanently ingrained on the internet. Something you post today becomes the property of social media and is circulated to possibly million of people. This data is not temporary, it lives on, ready to be discovered. This is a problem because once placed on the internet, there is usually nothing you can do to remove it. It merely stays there, ripe for harvesting by attackers.
Hacking Is Easy
To the average person a computer is a window to the internet. The more technically inclined can see past the external hardware. They realize what is within the machine, easily accessing the information hidden deep within. Hacking is easy for those who know how to do it. It is merely practice. Once they have honed their craft, it is a matter of time before your system is compromised.
Social Engineering Is Even Easier
Finally, to make matters worse, Social Engineering is even easier than hacking. Once again to those who know the art of exploitation, success is no harder than a simple conversation. There are many aspects to Social Engineering, and there are few who know the dangers posed. This is a terrible combination and the reason Social Engineering carries such a high success rate.
There are plenty more than seven reasons your money and data is not safe, but these few should illustrate a point to you. No matter what you try to do, There will always be the possibility of compromise. This is why it is so important to be vigilant and mitigate the risk. Doing this provides you the best chance to protect yourself from any attack.
